The Lisbon Maru Memorial

Many will know of the tragic sinking of the Lisbon Maru off the China coast just to the north of Shanghai.

In September 1942, the Lisbon Maru, a Japanese cargo ship, was transporting prisoners-of-war from Hong Kong to Japan to work in the labour camps. She was not carrying any appropriate identification nor had the Red Cross been notified. She was just north of Shanghai when by chance she was spotted by the USS Grouper, a US Navy submarine, which happened to be in the area. She fired seven torpedoes after which the Lisbon Maru sank.

Of the 1834 prisoners-of- war aboard, 828 died, including one HKVDC member who had transferred to serve with the Middlesex Regiment; the two other HKVDC members survived. The Middlesex lost 150 men.

Post war “The Volunteers” and “The Middlesex” had a strong bond with the result that one of our PSIs always came from the Middlesex Regiment, or latterly from their successor Regiments. Many will remember WO2 JA Frost, G France, P Dobson, PK Tidey, RM Malam and PJ Churcher.

There is currently no memorial to the Lisbon Maru, but plans are well advanced for a memorial to be placed at the UK’s National Arboretum. This is a private initiative for which funds are being sought and members of the Association and others are invited to participate by sending whatever sum is felt appropriate by cheque or bank transfer to the Association where the contributions will be consolidated and sent to the UK. Alternatively donations can be made direct to the UK – ask the Clubhouse Manager for details.

Messages from the Chairman, RHKR(V) RA (UK)

A message from our Chairman.
Veronica.
Hon. Sec.

Dear Members

We do hope that you are all keeping safe and well. I will try and refrain from using the now irritatingly hackneyed terms of "unprecedented" and "The New Normal".

I am sure we are all disappointed that we are unable to meet at the Gurkha Museum on Thursday to celebrate the 166th anniversary of our Foundation. We are not alone in having to cancel or postpone Foundation day events and I understand that celebrations in Hong Kong have been postponed to a provisional date in June.  I would love to be able to say that we could reschedule our lunch but, frankly at the moment, it is impossible. My hope is that we might be able to meet in August so we might also mark VJ day or also consider a lunch in London in September.

Nothwithstanding our lack of a lunch on 21st May, I have of course sent our traditional message of Loyal Greetings to Her Majesty and I attach it together with the response.  The Defence Services Secretary, who is the link to Buckingham Palace and the focus for such messages, has apologised that it is not possible to provide Her Majesty's response on headed note paper.  His department are all working from home as of course too is Her Majesty who is isolating at Windsor Castle, Buckingham Palace is closed and all communications are electronic.  I was tempted to cut and paste the response on a previous copy of the response but suspect may have ended up in the Tower for lesser acts of forgery!

With best wishes
Jeremy
